Swim Lessons- Level 5

LEARN-TO-SWIM- LEVEL 5-STROKE REFINEMENT


     The objectives of the level are coordination and refinement of the strokes.  Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (front craw, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke)  and increase their distances.  Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced.

Skills:

Water Entry & Exit

Shallow angle dive from the side.  Shallow-angle dive, glide 2 body lengths and begin any front stroke.  Be able to demonstrate in water at least 9 feet in depth.

Breath Control & Submerging:
Surface dive and pike surface dive.  Demonstrate, submerging completely.

Changing Direction & Position:
Front flip turn while swimming and this must be demonstrated.  Backstroke flip turn while swimming.

Treading:
Participant must be able to demonstrate treading water for at least 5 minutes.

Swim on Front:  
Front crawl.  Participant will demonstrate at least 50 yards.
Breaststroke.  Participant will demonstrate at least 25 yards.
Butterfly stroke.  Participant will demonstrate, at least 25 yards.

Swim on Back:
Elementary backstroke.  Student will demonstrate at least 50 yards.
Back Crawl.  Student will demonstrate at least 25 yards.
Sculling.  Student will demonstrate at least 30 seconds.

Swim on Side:
Sidestroke.  Student will demonstrate at least 25 yards.

Water Safety:
How to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR and recreational water illnesses.  Discuss/demonstrate.

"Think so you don't sink": then discuss

"Look before you leap":  then discuss

"Reach or throw, don't go":  then discuss

"Think twice before going near cold water or ice":  then discuss

"Wave, tide or ride, follow the guide":  then discuss

SAFETY IS ALWAYS FIRST.  ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO LEARN AT THEIR OWN RATE TO REDUCE FEAR!!
