The City of North Tonawanda is now accepting applications for a Full-Time Mechanic for the Parks Department. Applications will be received through March 20 at the Parks & Recreation Office located at 500 Wheatfield Street, North Tonawanda, NY 14120. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as indicated by civil service and either be a resident of North Tonawanda, or establish residency upon being hired.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves responsibility for establishing a preventative maintenance program for and efficiently performing mechanical repairs on a variety of machines and equipment used in the maintenance of parks and recreation, including a golf course. The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed for planning and carrying out technical details. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
1. Overhauls, repairs, maintains and lubricates tractors, mowers and related equipment used in the
maintenance of the parks and recreation department, including a golf course;
2. Dismantles and rebuilds defective or damaged auxiliary equipment on tractors, mowers and
3. Operates machine shop equipment including lathes, grinders, drill press and other machines to
make, rebuild or repair parts for above auxiliary equipment;
4. Performs necessary repairs to machines, tools and other shop equipment used in work;
5. Grinds, adjusts and backlaps a variety of power-driven and hand mowing machines:
5. May operate and maintain an automated irrigation system;
6. Performs groundskeeping and other maintenance work as needed.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the common practices, terminology, tools and equipment of the automotive or related trade; good knowledge of machine shop operations; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems; skill in the use and operation of standard machine shop tools and equipment; ability to maintain and repair large and small engines; ability to read electrical schematics; ability to prepare a preventative maintenance program; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma AND...
Two (2) years of full-time paid satisfactory experience as a skilled automotive mechanic in a municipal maintenance or school garage which involved automotive maintenance and repair work; OR
Two (2) years of full-time paid satisfactory experience as an automotive mechanic in a State approved automotive repair shop; OR
Three (3) years of full-time paid satisfactory experience doing automotive repair work under the direct supervision of an automotive mechanic in a State approved automotive repair shop;
NOTE: One (1) year of specialized automotive training in a recognized school equates to one (1) year of the above required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of an appropriate New York State Motor Vehicle Operator’s
License at the time of appointment and throughout the duration of employment.
